03/14/2006: "Spring"
Greetings and salutations to you, my fellow readers!
Spring has many meanings, have you ever noticed that? The image I've always had in my head is Mother Earth throwing back the blanket of snow and making the trees stretch forth their branches, with new leaves popping out. Nice imagery, but it hasn't quite come to that, since it's been snowing around here lately: snow on the hills, and books in the shop!
Spring Cleaning is another phenomenon, and amongst the local readers, people have been dusting off the shelves, and getting rid of old books. This has resulted in yours truly being snowed under with bags, boxes, and whole libraries walking in the door!
Spring also signifies change, and here at Book Oasis we have several new features, in addition to the plethora of new books coming in.
Our newest category added to the shop is our Discount Duplicates. It’s a three-sided shelf near the Classics shelf, and contains books which are duplicates of ones we already have in stock. To spur the sales of these items, the prices are like something out of the 1970’s: $1, $1.50, etc! This section is already becoming quite popular with bargain hunters. And, to answer the question on your lips, yes, you can discount these books by half with your existing credit account!
Speaking of credit accounts: for those of you who had credit accounts at the old Bookworm bookshop, please note that you have until August 1 to claim those credits for use at Book Oasis. After that date, they will become inactive.
NEW STOCK: the first week of March was a busy week for us. We received no less than three personal libraries, totaling sixty-two boxes of books! The books have been cleaned and put behind the counter, pending pricing and entry into the database. This is proving to be a big job, but it’s getting done. The books themselves comprise a full range of subjects, but here are some notable ones:
Grant, Michael History of Rome
Clark, Edmonds Voices of the Winds: Native American Legends
Fagan, Garrett G. Bathing in Public in the Roman World
Feiler, Bruce Walking the Bible: A Journey By Land Through the Five Books
of Moses.
Falcone, Joseph D. How to Design, Build, Remodel and Maintain Your Home.
(Who’s planning on some big Spring Cleaning project this year?)
Codrescu, Andrei The Blood Countess
Berrett, Lamar C. Discovering the World of the Bible
Bittman, Sam Seeds: Ultimate guide to Growing Vegetables, Herbs, Flowers.
New Yorker Magazine The New Yorker Album: 1925-1950. A wonderful collection of cartoons from the magazine. I’ve given this book as a gift many, many times (not to the same person, of course!).
Milne, A. A. The King’s Breakfast and other selections from A.A. Milne
Ojikutu, Bayo 47th Street Black
Herbert, Don Mr. Wizard’s Science Secrets (signed!)
BOOK SALE: May 6th, Saturday, we will have our Spring book sale. All books, all day, ½ Off! Mark your calendars!
The other big news is that we’re considering selling new books here as well! If this is something that would interest you, please let us know. The initial charges for selling new books are considerable, so before we go any further, we need to know if you would buy your new books from us rather than at one of the Superstores.
Since the demise of Goodenough Books, some rather large shoes have been left for Book Oasis to fill. We’re giving it our best effort.
Our newsletter has run into a few kinks in our email system, but that's in the process of repair. Thank you to all who signed up for the newsletter.
Hope to see you all soon!
